So, why did we decide to travel? My first instinct when someone asks me “why” is to respond with a “why not.” We always lived for the next holiday, so after a while, it only made sense to take a more permanent break. Life was good; we were comfortable, but we wanted to make it great, and we knew we were in control of our destiny. We weren’t running away from anything; we were actually running towards our dreams and our future of living a location independent lifestyle. It was time to get out of our comfort zone!
There wasn’t a person or group that inspired us to travel. Not a book or movie (but Rob does love “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”). But, it was actually our own instincts that inspired us to travel (which was something we had been ignoring for a while). We always knew we were meant to live a life less ordinary. The corporate job, “white picket fence” and kids just weren’t really for us. And even though we knew we were meant to break the mold, we had trouble establishing exactly what that looked like. After a few unsuccessful business ventures, we reevaluated and set our mind on travel.
We’ve always loved exploring new places, meeting new people and trying new things, so this was the perfect fit! Plus, we have family on both sides of the world which come with its own set of challenges. We knew that to achieve ultimate fulfillment, we needed to change our current way of doing things in order to create the lifestyle we needed. Our ideal situation is to live in Australia a quarter of the year, the States 4-months per annum and the remaining months exploring the world. So, we took a leap! and decided to abandon the cube to travel the world.
Of course, once we made the decision, there was the logistical part of it. How do we fund our travels? Where will we go? What happens afterwards? So, we set ourselves some goals. We started to save aggressively, researching every spare minute and selling everything (well, not our investment properties or dogs – but that’s a completely different story). We made sacrifices. We traded in our independence for a year of living with my in-laws. Though truth be told we loved living there and being closer to our family. Once the initial financial part was sorted, we needed to work out how we would sustain it. We decided we would start a travel blog, not only to keep our friends and family in the loop but to start creating the digital lifestyle we were after. Sure the market was saturated, but what isn’t these days? And no, there are no guarantees, but when is there? And we knew there would never be a better time than now.
So, here we are 6-months later and the journey continues…we’re absolutely loving it and our only regret is not doing it sooner.
We hope you’re keen to join our adventures and find your own inspiration for making travel a part of your reality! Live every minute.
